Dutch Intelligence Service paid Journalists to Spy on China

The Dutch Intelligence Service (AIVD) paid a number of Dutch journalists to spy on China during the Peking Olympic Games in 2008. They were asked to write reports on the Chinese officials they met. Thomas Bruning, Secretary General of the Dutch Association of Journalists (NVJ) considered this an extremely negative development. He said that the credibility and independence of the media is damaged by this, the more so as the journalists were paid.
