Netherlands Could be Prosecuted for Coup in Surinam

The Netherlands could possibly be brought before the International Court of Justice for its role in Desi Bouterse’s coup d’etat in Surinam in 1980. This was announced by Romeo Hoost, the chairman of the Committee for Remembrance of Surinam Victims. Max Vegelin van Claerbergen, Dutch ambassador in Surinam at the time, said on TV that Hans Valk, who was then the head of the Dutch military mission in Surinam, had directed the coup. Parliamentarian Harry van Bommel of the left-wing Socialist Party said that the International Court should investigate since, according to Hoost, the Netherlands overthrew a constitutional state.
